INITIAL BREEDING EXAM

At Catalina, our Initial Breeding Exam is a comprehensive evaluation designed to maximise your breeding success. This examination involves a multifaceted approach to ensure the reproductive health of your equine:

  • Ultrasound of the Ovaries: Our ultrasound technology provides an in-depth view of your mare's ovarian health, monitoring follicular development, and detecting any anomalies that could impede successful conception.

  • Uterine and/or Clitoral Swab: We conduct swab examinations to inspect the health of the reproductive tract, identifying potential infections or irregularities that could compromise fertility.

  • Palpation/Visualisation of the Cervix: Our experienced veterinarians and horse breeders employ advanced palpation and visualisation techniques to examine the cervix, uncovering tears, adhesions, or structural concerns that might affect fertility.

EMBRYO FLUSH AND TRANSFER

Embryo transfer is a procedure where we inseminate your valuable competition mare and 7 – 9 days later we flush the early embryo (blastocyst) from her uterus and transfer it into the healthy uterus of a recipient (surrogate) mare.

Catalina’s proven techniques and state-of-the-art equine facilities ensure the highest success rates in preserving and propagating valuable genetics. Our team of equine breeder specialists oversees every step of the process, from insemination to the final transfer, guaranteeing the utmost care for your valuable mare and the resulting embryo. With Catalina's embryo transfer services, you can have confidence in the precision of our procedures and the potential for expanding your breeding program with the finest genetics available.

ICSI

The process involves collecting oocytes (eggs) from a donor mare’s follicles, these oocytes are then cultured in the lab until they have matured. Once mature, the oocyte is fertilised in our laboratory via micro-injection of a single sperm cell. The fertilised oocyte should start to divide to become an embryo and the blastocyst stage of development is reached after 7-10 days of culture in an incubator. The embryo can then be transferred into the uterus of a suitable recipient mare or vitrified (frozen) for future use.

Oocyte pick up - “OPU”

Oocyte retrieval is a procedure in which eggs are taken from a mare’s ovaries. It is one of the steps in the Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection - “ICSI” process.

Cloning in its most simple definition is making a genetic copy of the original animal. In some respects we are making an identical “twin” of your horse. There are various reasons why you may consider cloning your horse, the most common reason to engage in this equine service is to preserve their genetics.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

There are four main steps involved during this horse breeding service:

  • Gene Banking

  • Creating Embryos
